Here is my final installment of rookie positional breakdowns, the defensive backs.  Like much of the other defenders, scheme plays a huge impact.  Strong safeties, in general, get more tackle landoncopportunities because they play closer to the line.  Rookie corner backs that play opposite top-tier teammates tend to receiver more targets which leads to more impactful chances to make tackles, breakup passes, and catch interceptions aka “the rookie corner rule”.  Here is a quick rundown of my top six defensive backs:

1. S Landon Collins, Giants

All the Giants starting safeties have left the organization.  This hard-hitting safety plays the run well and can do enough damage in pass coverage.  The New York linebacker corps is not that impressive, so he might lead his team in tackles.

2. CB Marcus Peters, Chiefs

He was the most physically dominating corner in his class and now Peters gets to play in the most pass happy division in the NFL.  The corner is aggressive and likes to take chances.  This might not be what you want from your favorite team’s corner, but you love a risk taker as a fantasy starter.

3. CB Eric Rowe, Eagles

Rowe played his first three seasons as a safety and converted to corner back his senior year.  Getting the opportunity to play on a great offensive team will put his opponents in panic mode, forcing them to play catch up.  This favors a ball hawk like Rowe.

4. CB  Trae Waynes, Vikings

This corner is the least physical player on my list.  He is more of a technician, but has the skills to hang with the likes of Randall Cobb, Golden Tate, and Kevin White.

5. CB/S Damarious Randall, Packers

He was a late riser in the NFL Draft and right now he sits as the slot man against three wide sets for the Packers.  With many of Green Bay’s corners moving on in the offseason, Randall will get the chance to make an impact from day one.

6. S Clayton Geathers, Colts

This is a big safety (6′ 2″ 218 lbs.) who plays better against the run than the pass.  Geathers can get caught peaking too much and appears to fall for too many fake handoffs that take him away from the big play.  He is a huge risk, huge reward player.
