Fantasy football players can breathe a momentary sigh of relief, the NFL and the players’ union have decided to take a timeout and extend the March 4th deadline one day.  While it doesn’t mean a deal is imminent (or another extension of the deadline), but dynasty league owners can still plan on building (or rebuilding) their teams’ this offseason.

With that news taking up much of the airwaves and internet blogs, there is another important event happening here at DynastyBlitz.com: Updated staff rookie draft rankings.

While we have no idea where any of these players will be drafted, Andy Miley, Bryan Fontaine and Scott Schnorrbusch have updated their own top-30 rankings as of March 3, 2011.

Each player is ranked by a combined consensus ranking.  Any unranked players received a value of 31 in the consensus rankings.

While version 1.0 featured individual player comments, look for new blog posts coming this week while each staff member highlights some of their most notable players in their rankings.

Andy Miley:

Since I believe in the Bruce Lee draft philosophy of “being like water” or simply adapting to whatever changes occur during a draft or in this case the combine, I have made some changes on my rookie draft board.  Good thing we named our first attempt, 2011 Rookie Draft Rankings 1.0.  Va Tech’s Ryan Williams moved up two spots to my #5, because he had a good combine and looked healthy which he did not do much of in 2010.  If he gets the chance to be a lead back, Williams could excel as many including myself see him possessing a healthy “Caddy ” Williams skill set.  Pitt’s Jonathan Baldwin took a big tumble from #5 to #11 on my rookie board.  He was slower than expected and did not stand out in any drills. I came away from watching the combine thinking Baldwin will be a good WR in two years, but not real helpful now.

Cal’s Shane Vereen went from unrated by me to my new #12 rated rookie.  I came away impressed with his speed, catching ability, and footwork.  Vereen is not as talented as his former college mate Jahvid Best, but can do enough as a change of pace guy who may in time grow into a full time role.  Notre Dame’s TE Kyle Rudolph dropped from #11 to #20 more because of lack of participation than anything else. Kentucky WR Randall Cobb jumped into my top 14 rankings from underrated territory like Vereen.  Cobb showed great playmaking skills in the receiving game as well as the return game.  I was impressed with his combine showing as my ranking shows.  The last rookie I want to mention is Edmond Gates from Abilene Christian.  He was tied for the fastest 40 time (4.37) and looked fluid in his drills.  Gates is a natural athlete who made it look easy and I’m sure had great coaching from his fellow teammates Johnny Knox and his cousin Bernard Scott. He could start returning kicks and become a Mike Wallace type of guy in less than a season.

Without further adieu, here are the rankings:
