Who exactly is Matt Flynn?

The third-year QB from LSU will get his first NFL start on Sunday night versus the Patriots after Aaron Rodgers was ruled out (concussion).

Matt Flynn has waited patiently for this opportunity after being drafted in the 7th round of the 2008 NFL Draft.  Flynn has served as the understudy to Rodgers for the past three seasons after he beat out fellow draftee Brian Brohm (2nd round) in the 2008 preseason.  Flynn was the starting QB for LSU in the BSC National Championship and earned MVP honors.

Flynn got the first extended playing time of his career once Rodgers was knocked out of the game against Detroit in Week 14.  Flynn struggled early but came back strong in the second half to finish with 15 completions in 26 attempts (57.7%) for 177 yards and an interception.  Flynn showed poise given the circumstances of having little practice time leading up to the game.  Flynn lacked the quick release and deep-ball accuracy of Rodgers; however, he gave his receivers the chance to make plays, displayed a good knowledge of the playbook, and showed ability to move around in the pocket.

Not many fantasy football owners know much about Flynn.  He has leadership and intangibles in spades but lacks the talent and athleticism that Rodgers brings to the table.  Not many quarterbacks of Flynn’s pedigree get the opportunity to pilot such a high-powered offense in the thick of a playoff hunt.

Aaron Rodgers is the franchise quarterback for Green Bay without question.  Flynn’s best opportunity at becoming a starter in the NFL is to impress in his audition on the national stage Sunday night.

With many quarterback situations up in the air next season and a less-than stellar crop of college quarterbacks available, Flynn could be an attractive trade target for several teams in the NFL.
