Rookie WRs: A Year in Review

Julio Jones

Image via Wikipedia

For the rest of December I will review several skill positions and try to decide their fantasy role for 2012.  It has been a season filled with great performances and utter disappointments from the rookie wide receivers.  After 14 weeks, this is as good of a time as any to find out what we learned so far.  Enjoy!

AJ Green

2011 stats through Week 14:  55 catches for 891 yards, 7 TDs and 3 for 28 rushing

Current role: Starter (the 14th ranked wide receiver in PPR scoring)

2012 expectations:  AJ Green is a top 5 dynasty WR right now.  I know the loftiest of expectations.  Green makes the rest of his team better as Andy Dalton is not a top 15 QB without him and Cedric Benson wouldn’t get above 70 yards in a game either.  Green has shown he can glide down the field, catch the ball at the highest point, and contort his body in any way necessary to make the catch.  He uses the sideline well to set up defenders.  In 2012, Green should increase his numbers as a result of the more time that Offensive Coordinator Jay Gruden works with Andy Dalton. Week 9 Blitzkrieg

Airial ArianEvery week during the season, I will throw out some quick observations of the previous NFL week. With the invention of the DVR and Directv’s ”Quick Bits”, I am able to watch almost every snap of every game and give you a lightning “blitz” war “krieg” to bring to your fantasy league for domination. Bring on the games!

The Falcons game against the Colts was hardly a game.  Atlanta jumped to a 14-0 advantage early on and never looked back.  The Colts only score was a short interception return by CB Jerraud PowersDelone Carter had the first 2 carries of the game, the second which he fumbled and then he didn’t come back until the 4th quarter.  Donald Brown took advantage of the rookie as he had 16 carries for 70 yards of which most were on draws and designed to get the ball carrier in space.  Austin Collie had a team high 4 catches for 32 yards which isn’t saying much.   Curtis Painter had a miserable day with just under a 50% completion rate, 98 yards, and 1 pick.  The Falcons established the run game early with Michael Turner running for 71 yards and a short TD.  Rookie Jaquizz Rodgers also added 60 yards on 11 touches.  Fellow rookie Julio Jones had his best game as a pro finishing with 3 receptions for 131 yards on 4 targets.  The first catch was a contested 50 yard TD catch that was originally ruled a trap and Jones hauled in another 80 yard TD (this one he took a short pass and ran away from everyone).  Jones was solid in the reverse game as well with 2 carries for 33 yards.  Matt Ryan threw for a 58% completion rate with 275 yards and 3 TDs and the interception previously mentioned.  This was the first game that the Falcons offense could do whatever they wished and made the Colts problems extremely clear. Rookie Report Week 5

QB Andy Dalton

Every week I will take a look at the rookie play to gage how some of the rookies were used.  I will then try to decide if you should pick these rookies up from your waiver wire or attempt to secure them in a trade.

Julio Jones hurt his hamstring and left the field before the end of the first half.  The good news is he walked under his own power.  He looked amazing the week before but only managed one catch and one carry in this game before he was injured.  Jones is a wait and see guy.  Better days are coming, but I’m not sure how great they will be until Michael Turner is in an another uniform.  For the rest, click here: http://www.fantasyalarm.com/rookie-report-week-5/

Rookie Report Week 2

Julio Jones

Every week I will take a look at the rookie play to gage how some of the rookies were used.  I will then try to decide if you should pick these rookies up from your waiver wire or attempt to secure them in a trade.

Julio Jones looks a lot different with Nnamdi Asomugha draped all over him.  Jones managed to catch 2 for 29 yards on 8 targets.  There were a few spectacular catches he might have left on the field, but he is forgiven with the one of the two top CBs on him.  The two catches he did have made me believe things will only get better this year.

Jacquizz Rodgers did not see a lot of the field, but he was used almost as much as Jason Snelling, the #2 RB for the Falcons.  I really liked his red zone carry that he got down to the 3, which Turner took in the next play.  He is a dynasty play and is getting better. 2011 Fantasy Football Rookie Report: Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Atlanta Falcons

I will be the first to admit, when I was putting my original ranking up for Mr. Rodgers back around the combine, he was an afterthought.  This was not an indictment on him.  I just liked many of the 2011 rookie running backs a bit more.  The Atlanta Falcons made some strong moves in the offseason.  They resigned most of their offensive line, traded up for Julio Jones, got Harry Douglas healthy, resigned backup running back Jason Snelling, and keep Tony Gonzales from retiring.  Michael Turner is an excellent ground and pound running back, but isn’t known to catch many passes or make people miss.  Bringing in Rodgers, who is familiar with a spread type offense, can only help their whole team.  What is Jacquizz Rodger’s outlook for 2011 and beyond?  Click here for the rest: http://www.fantasyalarm.com/2011-fantasy-football-rookie-report-jacquizz-rodgers-rb-atlanta-falcons/

My initial thoughts for top 2011 rookie WRs and TEs

My first blog entry was about 2011 rookie QBs and RBs dynasty owners need to focus on watching.  My second installment deals with the pass catchers.  The dominance of RBs in fantasy football has been sliding each year as points per reception leagues are now the norm.  Getting young, cheap help can make the difference between a championship team and a borderline playoff team.  Continue reading
