PFF Fantasy: Dynasty Slants – Breakout Candidates: QB Jake Locker

The period between free agency and the NFL Draft is my favorite time of year as a dynasty owner. There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the upcoming season. Dynasty owners thrive on the uncertainty by crunching statistics and reading over team reports to find the next breakout players.

Around this time each year, I target a few players in my dynasty leagues that have breakout potential. Some of it is based on gut feelings, but mostly from watching game footage and finding players that have excelled in a limited role. Over the next few weeks, I will cover players I have targeted for my own teams. Last time I covered tight end Kyle Rudolph. Next up on my list of breakout candidates is Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker.

Rookie QBs and TEs: A Year in Review

This is the third installment of my 2011 rookie review series. It has been a season filled with great performances in regards to many of the rookie quarterbacks and mostly disappointments from the rookie tight ends. After 15 weeks, this is as good of a time as any to find out what we learned so far. Enjoy!

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

2011 stats through Week 15: 283-475-3,722 yards passing, 17 TDs, 16 interceptions, 114 attempts for 609 rushing yards and 13 rushing TDs

Current role: Starter (4th ranked quarterback in leagues that equal passing/rushing TDs the same)

2012 expectations: In my twenty plus years playing fantasy football and forty odd years watching football, I am hard pressed to find many other football players that wanted to win as badly as Cam Newton. Sure guys like Peyton Manning and Brett Favre come to mind, but this is a rookie who everyone, including myself, doubted as a sure-fire quarterback. Now the real question is: how good is he? I am willing to put him in the top six or seven dynasty quarterbacks. Now some may say, hey “dynasty expert”, Newton is a top four quarterback this year, so he can only get better.

Newton can get better, but looking at his surrounding teammates I’m not so sure that his team is built for his long-term success. Newton has two dynamic receiving threats in Steve Smith and Greg Olsen, then below average or aging talent in Brandon LaFell, Legedu Naanee, and Jeremy Shockey. Yes, he has good running backs in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Unfortunately, the three of them (Newton, D-Will, and J-Stew) cancel each other’s rushing skills out. 2011 Fantasy Football Rookie Report: Jake Locker, QB, Tennessee Titans

With former HC Jeff Fisher out of the Music City, the Titans are looking to make changes.  Too bad at the time of this writing, the Titans have more questions than answers.  Matt Hasselbeck looks to be a placeholder for Jake Locker, but may hold the job for a while.  Top WR Kenny Britt is facing league suspension and all-world RB Chris Johnson is holding out, so it seems to be a great time to break in a rookie QB slowly.  The Titans hope that they found the QB of their future in Locker.

2011 NFL Draft First Round Dynasty Impact

The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft is in the books and now we can start to breakdown the dynasty impact of the top rookies and their destination in the NFL.

These are my initial quick take on what transpired last night for the offensive players selected: Continue reading

2011 ESPN All-Star Football Challenge, LB Von Miller impresses

SOUTHLAKE, TEXAS – The 2011 edition of the popular all-star challenge for draft-eligible prospects is in the books.  It is time to recap all the action as it pertains to dynasty fantasy football leagues.

The 13 players in attendance participated in a variety of drills that gave them another chance to show off their intangibles, personality, interaction with their competitors and how they competed.  It is important to note that not much stock is put into these performances by scouts, but it is a fun event for the players and draftniks alike. 2011 ESPN All Star Challenge

If you are old enough to remember, back in the 70s, there was “Battle of the Network Stars.”  The three major networks had their teams of stars doing challenges showing their determination and athletic ability.  The same concept occurred on the 2011 ESPN All Star Challenge.  Quarterbacks threw at moving targets and receivers; running backs and wide receivers caught passes from JUGS machines and QBs, while sometimes completing the obstacle course.  Linebackers and defensive linemen also ran through their own obstacle course, and flipped tractor tires for feats of strength. 2011 Senior Bowl Thoughts

The granddaddy of the 2011 all-star college games is now in the books. Some college stars shined brightly, while other stars fell to the earth, a few stars had limited visibility, and some faint stars became brighter.

My initial 2011 rookie QB and RB thoughts

Some dynasty players may think this is the quietest time of the year.  Do not let that be you!  Use this time to get a leg up on your competition by starting your own rookie scouting.  First I am no “expert” but I am getting my first impressions on players.  Small differences may make the difference between drafting LeSean McCoy and Chris “Beanie” Wells.
